Shell Eco-Marathon Ultra Endurance Vehicle

A bare aluminum frame. One Honda GX-35 36 cc motor. 6 months until competition. Facing daunting schedule, manpower, and financial hurdles, UTEP's Shell Eco team managed to produce a race ready vehicle in a span of 6 months. However, this feat was not achieved without first solving major technical challenges.

CPU Cooling Unit

Inspired by high-end gaming desktop hardware, this project aimed to utilize concepts learned in Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer in order to develop a cost efficient design solution to adequately and safely cool performance computer components.

Self-Steering Quadcopter

Melding design and rapid prototyping concepts learned in previous courses, this example was designed, built, and tested in just under 4 weeks with the help of 3D printing technologies. The real challenge, however, was developing command programming for autonomous obstacle avoidance flight.

Shell Eco Marathon Vehicle Electric Starter

Designing an engine start system appropriately sized for the Shell Eco Prototype Vehicle was one of the most significant technical challenges the team had to overcome. Utilizing concepts learned in Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials, and Mechanical Design proved pivotal in designing, producing, and ultimately implementing an adequate, functional system to our vehicle.

Owing in large part to lessons learned from legacy prototypes, the design and development of lightweight, cost effective and durable parts became modus operandi as efforts to streamline ramped up. This particular component was designed, modeled, fabricated, and tested in under 3 weeks.

Quadcopter Arduino Programming Project

Learning the nuances of programming the versatile Arduino chip proved to be an invaluable asset in the development of the Quadcopter project. A considerable amount of time was devoted to learning C, C++, writing basic programming code, and learning to upload and debug code.
